How to reduce cost per lead in Google Ads by converting more of your clicks

Last reviewed October 18, 2026

Quick answerCost per lead is your cost per click divided by your conversion rate. At the same cost per click, a page that converts 3% of clicks instead of 2% cuts cost per lead by a third, which is why the page matters.

How to reduce cost per lead in Google Ads: the formula

Cost per lead is your cost per click divided by your conversion rate, so you reduce it by paying less per click or by converting more of the clicks you already get. The landing page is where the second part is decided.

At the same cost per click, a page that converts 3% of clicks instead of 2% cuts cost per lead by a third, because 3% is 1.5 times the leads from the same clicks. That is arithmetic, not a forecast, and the same formula applies to Meta ads. Google's help pages give no typical cost per lead, so put your own account's cost per click and conversion rate into the formula.

How to calculate cost per lead in Google Ads

Google defines conversion rate as conversions divided by total eligible interactions, such as ad clicks. Its example is 50 conversions from 1,000 interactions, a 5% rate. Cost per conversion is total cost divided by the number in the Conversions column; when the conversion is a lead, that is your cost per lead.

For leads, Google advises counting only one conversion per interaction, so page refreshes do not inflate the count.

Why the landing page moves cost per lead

Conversion rate is the page's part of the formula. Google says Quality Score is a diagnostic tool and not an input in the ad auction, while Ad Rank counts the quality of the ads and landing page among six factors; even so, a lower cost per click from a better page is not guaranteed.

Changes to test on the page

  • Text that matches the keyword, so the headline repeats what the searcher typed.
  • One action on the page.
  • A multi-step form in place of one long form.

Change one thing at a time, on one web address, with a traffic split. How to AB test landing pages in Google Ads gives the steps.

When a builder pays for itself

A builder pays for itself only if any extra leads from its pages are worth more than its fee. Divide the monthly fee by what one lead is worth to you; the answer is the extra leads a month it would need to bring. That is arithmetic on your own numbers, not a forecast. If you can edit a page on your own site, test there first. A builder fits when you need several pages or testing built in.

Plan fees, billed monthly, as read on October 18, 2026: Instapage Create $99; Instapage Optimize with 30,000 unique monthly visitors $199; Unbounce Experiment $149; Leadpages Grow $99; Swipe Pages Marketer $89; systeme.io Startup $17. Instapage counts unique monthly visitors (different people, counted again after 3 days) and Unbounce counts a visitor once a month, so their traffic limits are not like for like.

Instapage Optimize with 30,000 unique monthly visitors, $199 a month, billed monthly, adds A/B testing and multi-step forms for testing what turns more clicks into leads. Instapage's help center says its cost reporting has been removed for now, so read cost per lead in Google Ads. Instapage's 14-day trial needs a card, which is charged when the trial ends unless you cancel; pages can be built during it.
