Landing page optimization for Google Ads: what Google rates and what to change

Last reviewed October 18, 2026

Quick answerGoogle rates how relevant and useful the page is to people who click the ad, as part of Quality Score. Match the page to the keyword, keep one action, fix destination errors, then test one change at a time.

Landing page optimization for Google Ads: what Google rates

Landing page optimization for Google Ads starts with what Google rates: landing page experience, its measure of how relevant and useful your landing page is to people who click your ad. It is one of three parts of Quality Score, next to expected click-through rate and ad relevance. Google compares it with other advertisers on the exact same search over 90 days and labels it Above average, Average or Below average.

You see the status in the Landing Page Exp. column of the Keywords table. Google says an Average or Below average status may indicate an opportunity to make improvements. The page is yours to change, on your own site or in a landing page builder.

Landing page experience, Quality Score and Ad Rank

Quality Score is a diagnostic tool, scored from 1 to 10 at keyword level. Google's help page says it is not an input in the ad auction and is not a key performance indicator. Ad Rank is based on six factors, among them your bid and the quality of your ads and landing page.

So a better landing page experience rating does not guarantee a lower price per click. Instapage's search-ads page says Google and Bing reward relevant landing pages with higher ad rankings and lower cost-per-clicks; that is Instapage's own claim.

Destination checks that stop ads

Google's destination requirements name three faults that can stop an ad:

  • The destination returns an HTTP error code to Google's AdsBot crawler.
  • The display URL and final URL domains do not match, or the final URL redirects to a different domain.
  • The page is unnecessarily difficult or frustrating to navigate.

Google's landing page test checks a page before launch. It reports a domain mismatch, a page not found, an AdsBot block or a redirect problem. It does not check ad policy violations and does not support redirects.

Design changes worth testing on the page

Change one thing at a time. Three changes to test:

  • Text that matches the keyword, so the headline repeats what the searcher typed; dynamic landing pages Google Ads explains how.
  • One action on the page, one form or one button.
  • A shorter form, or a multi-step form that splits a long one into steps.

Conversion rate is conversions divided by tracked interactions; Google's example is 50 conversions from 1,000 interactions, which is 5%. At the same cost per click, a page that converts 3% of clicks instead of 2% cuts cost per lead by a third. That is arithmetic, not a forecast. How to AB test landing pages in Google Ads covers running the test.

Builders with keyword-matched text and testing

Instapage Optimize with 30,000 unique monthly visitors (different people, counted again after 3 days), at $159 a month, billed annually as read on October 18, 2026, adds dynamic text replacement and server-side A/B testing, which Create leaves out. Dynamic text replacement changes page text to match a value in the web address; server-side A/B testing shows each visitor one version from the server and splits traffic between versions.

Instapage Optimize comes with a 14-day trial that asks for a card before it starts and charges it when the trial ends unless you cancel.

Where keyword-matched text and A/B testing start, prices billed annually
BuilderPlan holding both toolsPrice, a month billed annually
InstapageInstapage Optimize, 30,000 unique monthly visitors$159
UnbounceUnbounce Experiment$112
LeadpagesLeadpages Grow, with manual A/B testing$79
Swipe PagesSwipe Pages Marketer$69
LandingiLandingi Optimize; its table lists text replacement on every plan$119
systeme.ioNo plan holds both: A/B tests from Free; no text replacement found$0 on Free

For one ad group, your site editor is enough; a builder matters when many ad groups need their own text or you want testing built in. Instapage vs Unbounce compares the two plans that hold both tools in full.
